Beta Departed is new, and nobody has run it for long. Try it, read the code, tell me what breaks. Do not trust it yet with something that matters.

Departed

Terms

Departed is free software, offered with no warranty, and it is still in beta.

What this is

Departed is a free, open source program published by Lightmorphic Ltd. This website describes it and tells you how to install it. We do not host it for you, run it for you, or hold any of your files.

The licence

The software is licensed under the GNU General Public Licence, version 3. You may use it, read it, change it and share it under the terms of that licence, which is included with the source code. Nothing on this page overrides it.

No warranty

The software is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind, as the licence sets out in full. It is in beta. It has not been running long, it has not been audited by anyone, and it may fail.

Be clear about what failure means here. It might send your archive when it should not have. It might fail to send when it should have. It might stop running without telling you. Do not use it as the only arrangement for anything that matters, and test it with the test email button before you rely on it.

Your responsibilities

You encrypt your own archive and you choose your own passphrase. If you lose that passphrase, the archive cannot be recovered, by us or by anyone. If you give the passphrase to the wrong person, they can open the archive. If you leave the program reachable from the open internet, other people may find it. Those choices are yours.

The letter you write inside the program is not protected the way your files are. The program has to be able to read it in order to send it, so anyone who takes the whole machine can read it too. Keep anything private inside the locked files instead.

If you run it for other people, you are the one holding their accounts. Removing an account deletes that person's files, settings and history, and there is no undo.

Limits of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Lightmorphic Ltd is not liable for any loss arising from your use of this software or this website, including lost, disclosed or undelivered data. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.

Getting in touch

Bugs and questions about the software are best raised on GitHub. For anything else, email privacy@lightmorphic.com.
